If you’re stopping at Port of Roatan and want to make the most out of your one-day visit to the island, we recommend you to book a tour in advance with us. The largest of the two ports in Roatán is the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, located on the southwest coast of the island and owned by Carnival corporation. Obviously, this is the docking port (and Terminal) for Carnival ships but also for Princess, Holland & America, and all other cruise lines belonging to this corporation. Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay whilst ships from all other cruise lines dock at Port of Roatán Town Center (aka Coxen Hole). After hearing many great things about Roatan, we were excited to finally visit.

The sandy beach is about a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. These include snorkel masks and fins, paddle boards, Zayak, Fun Cat, Sea Hammock, Aqua Cycle, Aqua Cycle Boat, Paddle Boat, Hobie Kayak, kayaks, umbrellas, and more. The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 excited passengers ready to explore the welcome center and isle of Roatan. As you exit the pier you will be guided through a duty-free shop. The shop sells a variety of items including beach necessities such as water shoes and sunscreen as well as popular duty-free things.

Along the drive from the Roatan cruise port to the adventure park, our guide gave us a brief overview of the island and the people who live here. That is really important for us, in that we want to actually understand what life is like anywhere we visit. There are two different piers that cruise ships stop at when visiting Roatan.

Whether you’re looking for a day of adventure or relaxation, these ports offer easy access to all that Roatan has to offer. Both Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole Roatan cruise ports serve as ideal starting points for exploring Roatan. Developed by Carnival Corporation, Mahogany Bay is a purpose-built port designed to offer a seamless and immersive experience for cruise passengers. Because local residents eat iguanas, a resident created The Iguana Farm to protect and breed the dwindling population. The best time to see the iguanas is early afternoon at feeding time. The farm is in French Key, just past French Harbour, which is about seven miles northeast of the cruise port.
At port, there will be many drivers aggressively trying to get you to drive with them. I would recommend taking a private tour but if you just want a ride, try to arrange with a reputable company in advance of your trip. You can also visit the Roatan Rum Company, which sells the most delicious rum cake! Some is packaged to easily take home from your travels, though you may have a tough time waiting to dig into it. Roatan is not only a natural paradise, but also a cultural melting pot, with a variety of ethnic groups and languages.

The waters are shallow, warm and crystal clear, with excellent snorkeling opportunities offshore. Part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef – the world’s second-largest barrier reef system, Roatan is a paradise destination for snorkeling, scuba diving, and all water-related activities. The island is part of the world’s second-largest barrier reef system (after the Australian Great Barrier Reef) and is famous for its incredible diving and snorkeling options.

We had heard many great things about the island and were eager to visit. Indeed, Roatan proved to be a wonderful cruise port and it is easy to see why it is gaining popularity. It also serves as a home-port to several of Carnival’s ships that sail from Roatán Island throughout the Caribbean Sea. With its stunning scenery and wide range of activities, Mahogany Bay has quickly become one of the most popular ports of call for Carnival Cruise Line passengers.
The shore excursion bus hub is on the right side of the terminal. On the left side, you will find the the taxi dispatch and the exist to the main street leading to Coxen Hole. Although within walking distance, there isn't much to see in this small town.
This half-day excursion will take you on an adventure up to the North Shore and the historic fishing village of Punta Gorda. Drivers need to be 16 years or older and have a driver’s license. Dive and snorkel excursions are available that will take you to spots where sea turtles frequent. It is an exceptional beach for swimming and snorkeling, and the location of a delicious Caribbean Grill called Ginger’s. However, paying a nearby resort for their day-use fee gives you access to chairs and a break from the vendors trying to sell their goods and services. There is a fantastic variety of duty-free boutiques and local souvenir shops in The Town Center shopping area at the Port of Roatán.
RIMS is in Sandy Bay and features over 50 km (30 mi) of barrier reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds. All reef systems throughout Bay Islands are protected by the government and helped by charitable donations. There is no end to the different types of shore excursions or tours that are available in Roatan.
Then a ride around the island of Roatan on a dune buggy might be just the thing. These all-terrain vehicles can be rented at vendors operating at the docks and rode all over the trails around the island. These buggies will take you off the main path and away from the other tourists for some fun that avoids the large crowds that will flock to the beaches and restaurants. For those who want a relaxing beach day there’s plenty right at the cruise port in Mahogany Bay. You don’t have to break the bank, and if you bring your own snorkel gear you can enjoy some really great reefs on the cheap. No, Mahogany Bay is not a private island, but simply the cruise port for Carnival Corp. owned ships.
It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here. It serves ships from the fleets of NCLH-Norwegian, RCG-Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Virgin Voyages. Coxen Hole is the capital of Bay Islands and their largest city. The port is named after Captain John Coxon / Coxen - a famous late-17th century buccaneer (British pirate).
However, this does not mean that you should let your guard down or ignore the common-sense precautions. The world’s second-longest reef system, the Mesoamerican Reef, lies just off the coast of West Bay Beach. This beach is minutes from the cruise ship docks and has some of the best snorkeling and diving in Roatán. In this post, I’ll share the best things to do in Roatán on a cruise, including shore excursions as well as inexpensive or free activities. You’ll also learn everything you need to know about visiting the Roatán cruise port for the day and get answers to commonly asked questions.
